Happ(y)ness

Have you found higher ground?
Or are you lost at sea?
Have you reached where you want to be?
Or trapped in purgatory?
Did it all go according to plan?
Or was it an uphill climb?
I don't know what I'm looking for, do you?
But halting this expedition is not an option
Happiness, in my head
Happiness, flowing in my veins
Scouring heaven and earth, we mortals go
On a wild goose chase, a dog after its own tail
Not realizing it is on the ground you stand
Concealed under your nose, buried beneath the layers
Perched on your shoulder, the devil sniggers
Your fairy godmother relinquishes her crown in defeat
How foolish, the birds tweet
How futile, the wind whistles
We fought with ghosts, and spider webs
Fancying something, desiring someone
Craving the next big thing
Life's quest, soul's obsession, it had become
Wars were waged, gold was accumulated
Lessons were taught, stamps of approval coveted
Happiness, in your head
Happiness, flowing in your veins
In plain sight, and yet in obscurity it lied
Shrieking to be found, for aeons
Judgements cloud our senses, prisoner of our own minds
Drowning out the little inner voice
Blinding us from the exquisite soul inside
Brick walls are meant for forts and tombs
Not spiritual energies of divine avatars
Seasons alter, people transform, life perseveres
Around you, blurry lifeless images rushing past in glory
All's well as long as I take my next breath
One more sunrise, one more day, one more chance
Brings with it the promise,
Of all the things that you couldn't do yesterday.

Happiness, in my head
Happiness, flowing in your veins.
