Pain - I Lie Dormant...

PAIN: (noun) - physical suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury
       - a feeling of marked discomfort in a particular part of the body
       - mental suffering or distress

What happens when your first love is your first heartbreak too? And I don't mean just romantic love, but any kind/form of love - between a parent and a child, sibling love, love between friends etc.

Heartbreaks are always tough, but the most toughest ones are the ones that never seem to heal. The ones that don't heal usually aren't the romantic kind (those are quite easy to get over, in my experience. Its the lifelong relationships that you can't live without, nor can you live with - parental love, sibling love etc.) In medicine, a wound thats not allowed to heal forms an ulcer which then goes onto get infected followed by necrosis, gangrene, amputation of that particular limb etc. I guess what am trying to say is that this heartbreak is somewhat like that - solution? I hardly doubt I can amputate my heart. People say, time heals everything - you move on but do we really move on or do we just condition ourselves to live with the pain? There's a word for it in medicine, adaptation - nerve endings adapt when they are constantly stimulated with the same stimulus strength, but it also says that they never completely adapt to painful stimulus. So maybe, when you have lived with the pain for so long, it eventually becomes a part of you that your body doesn't really differentiate it from the rest of you, and lies dormant inside of you - until the same stimulus, such as memories or the cause of the pain comes back to haunt you in the present and Voila! the pain wakes up and makes you realize that it has never really gone away. Its like a virus! Just as difficult it is to avoid a common cold your entire life, it is the same for a heartbreak! Try as you might, there are certain inevitable things in life that you just can't run/escape/hide from.

So for now, I will provide shelter to this virus until it becomes active again and treat its symptoms - even the best doctor (time) can't cure this ailment.

  1. Indeed, the pain would be inevitable in a heart break I guess, afterall, trying to forget someone you love is like trying to remember someone you don't know.
